Many college students taking a one-semester introduction to the Old Testament or even a course surveying the whole Bible initially encounter problems of historicity as soon as they discuss the opening chapters of Genesis. Can anyone today seriously believe that the world was created in six twenty-four-hour periods of time only six thousand years ago, that there was a historical Adam and Eve created directly by God as completely sinless, and that their disobedience in eating the fruit of a literal
